A telephone is connected to the exchange by a pair of copper wires. Each pair runs from a customer’s home to a Primary Connection Point via a Distribution Point. PCPs are the green cabinets that are located at the side of the road. DPs are usually buried under manholes set in footpaths. The PCP connects the wires from the customer’s home to a pair of wires from the exchange. Inside the exchange the wires in the external cable are terminated on the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) and then are connected to the internal exchange equipment. Wire GaugesThe values used in Geoff's presentation:
WiringThe initial run of cable uses the thinnest gauge 0.32. This was to reduce the bulk and increase space within the exchange manhole where all the exchange cabling runs. Within a few hundred metres there will be a joint connecting to a lower loss, heavier gauge cable, either 0.4 or 0.5 mm. This runs to the PCP. From the PCP to the DP 0.5mm is usually used.
