Interested in lobbying BT for Broadband access?
Contact
me!
Being coordinator of this lobby group holds no ice with BT
I'm trying to get my phone number sorted for Broadband registration. I am
failing abysmally!
To clarify: Yes my aim is to get Broadband, but BT do not have my phone
number on their registration database. I won't be able to proceed with an order
if my phone number doesn't show up when the ISP starts the process.
Here is the email trail in reverse chronological order:

Dear Mr. Hubbard,
It looks like the situation has now been resolved. Here is the checker's
result for your line:
For Telephone Number 01908309xxx on Exchange BRADWELL ABBEY
Your exchange has broadband ADSL. However, it appears that the length of the
telephone line between you and the exchange may possibly cause some
problems.
Our initial test on your line suggests that you may be able to have a
broadband ADSL service that provides up to 512Kbps download speed, but the
upstream bandwidth will vary according to the length of your telephone line.
It will not be possible to provide the 1Mbps or 2Mbps broadband ADSL
services.
If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm
if your line is suitable, and if so for what speed of service.
Thank you for your interest.
Again, sorry for the delays.

| 27/5/03 A Phone Call
The excited chirpy voice of young
Scott (Complaints Executive,
BTopenworld Complaint Review Service Team) calls.
The answering machine takes the call:
"Mr Hubbard Some really good news for you. It's so good I haven't time to
email you." .. more excited talking..."It's so good... beeeep"
The joys of a one minute timer!
I call back.
Apparently all my problems lie with the fact I have 4 telephone numbers
assigned to one account that I pay by using direct debit. The other three
numbers are assigned from the "Home Highway".
It's my fault: I agreed to the BT sales agent suggestion of lumping all
numbers together!
"Here's the solution. Place the 01908 309xxx number on a separate
account, that will sort it."
"It will cost you an extra £7.54 a quarter. The database will be changed
over at 03:00 in the morning. There will be a 1ms delay in service."
I agree to this change in accounts. I do not believe any of the
reasons, least of all the 1000μs service
interruption I was to suffer.
The lad calls back with my new account number, and a promise to call me
tomorrow to confirm it's all working.
As I type this up, preparing to paste this
hyperlink
in, I discover IT WORKS.
I will now duly register. |
Hi Miranda
I look forward to checking the availability of ADSL on my wee telephone next
week.
Thanks for persevering.

| 23/5/03 Dear Mr.
Hubbard,
First of all apologies for the delays in getting this problem resolved.
We have restored the link between the 01908 309xxx number and the database
that is used by the checker. It will be in the next upload of telephone
numbers and should appear on the checker somewhere next week.
Thank you for your patience,
Regards,

cceo@bt.com 14/5/03 Dear Sir
I have a BT telephone number. 01908 309xxx.
Why is the number not on your Broadband database?
http://www.btopenworld.com/broadband/availability
My BT account number is 4834 xxxx.
It's been six weeks since I started to progress this.
I hear that BT has intentions on converting TPON customers to copper, and
hence providing ADSL.
As I cannot register my ADSL interest with you I fear I will lose out on the
forthcoming changes.
Would you kindly expedite this matter?
Regards
Nick |
Dear Mr. Hubbard,
As you may have noticed through the other e-mail, I have asked the problem with your telephone number to be investigated. I was going to copy you in
on the response to my colleague, but I accidentally sent it directly to
you....That will teach me to start the day without coffee!
Either way, I will get back to you once I receive Martin's answer and see
if there is a way this line can be registered.

Hi Martin,
Michael Curry suggested I contact you about the following problem.
Our customer Nick Hubbard e-mailed us about his telephone line 01908 309xxx.
It has been a working BT line since January, but somehow it does not appear
on the BT Wholesale availability checker at
www.bt.com/broadband as
a valid BT number. This is a problem because it stops him from registering
his interest.
We were unable to find a reason why this number is not recognised. Could you
advice?
Mr. Hubbard's message is copied in below.
Thanks,

btw.broadband.deployment@bt.com, 25/4/03 Hi
Thanks for confirming that my phone line is a valid BT one.
Would it be an idea to cancel my phone line and get another number?
01908 309xxx may be hard coded into your web server as a no-no!
BT may consider me a "persona non gratis" - I'm the coordinator for
http://www.bb4monkston.co.uk/
Anyway.... thanks for keeping me informed!
Nick |
Dear Mr. Hubbard,
Thank you for your mail. I have tried to find the reason why the 01908
309xxx number is not being recognised by the checker. It is definitely
registered in our system as a valid BT line.
I will look into this further
and see if there is a way you can still register your interest.
Regards and sorry for the delay,

btw.broadband.deployment@bt.com,
3/4/03 Hi Miranda
> Could you please tell me when you had this line installed?
January some time. Let's say the 31st - more than 42 days ago!
Originally it was November. I had Home Highway installed in January on 01908
309xxx.
I then asked for an extra new line to be put in, taking the number 01908
309xxx. (This was after I was advised that ASDL / Broadband is not possible
on a line equipped with Home Highway.)
Thanks for replying. "It's good to talk!"™

Dear Mr. Hubbard,
There are a number of reasons why lines do not show up on the database. They
are either lines from other companies (which as you say, is not the case) or
they may be new lines. Could you please tell me when you had this line
installed?
