Does the Digital Highway stop at Junction 13 of the M1?
Many smaller businesses in Milton Keynes – particularly those in CMK
- cannot receive broadband services and cannot justify the expense of
direct connection leased lines. Business leaders believe that the city,
which regards itself as a vibrant and go ahead entrepreneurial place to
do business, is being held back by inadequate DSL supply and the lack of
a significant plan to remedy this situation.
Milton Keynes Chamber of Commerce and its Business and Technology
Network is joining with other local organisations to lobby government to
correct this situation. Members think that the poor state of internet
infrastructure could deter start-up ventures, hinder the growth of
existing smaller companies and have a detrimental effect on the future
economic prosperity of the city. Furthermore they believe the
shortcoming is a fundamental flaw in the expansion plans for growth of
Milton Keynes.
“If Milton Keynes is to become a centre for knowledge-based
industries competing internationally, then it must have the best quality
communications technology,” said Fredi Nonyelu, Chairman, Milton
Keynes Business and Technology Network “Infrastructure before
expansion is essential.”
The Chamber would therefore like to hear real stories from the
business community about how the lack of good quality and fast broadband
has hindered business. Is it holding back your company from growing or
taking on new work? Will it be necessary to relocate your business
outside the Milton Keynes area so that you can access fast broadband?
Does the current poor service prevent flexible working and key staff
working from home?
