How to apply for Broadband

What you should do to apply, or re-apply, for Broadband...

Step 1

Go on-line to the BT Broadband checker web site and check to see if your telephone line can support Broadband.

Please note that the Broadband checker web site is not 100% accurate, although I hear it's "getting better"

If the BT Broadband checker gives a negative result such as "No, you can't have Broadband" then goto step 2 below.

The BT Broadband checker has given you a positive result.

Apply with an ISP of your choice for a broadband service. There are several Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to choose from. There's a list on the ADSL guide site.

You are not obliged to use a BT ISP just because you are using a BT telephone line.

Usually it takes a couple of weeks for the ISP to get their act together. Your ISP will be liaising with BT Wholesale to connect your telephone line to the Broadband equipment at the BT telephone exchange.

You may choose to buy your own ADSL router, or just get the ISP to organise everything for you.

All being well you will soon have Broadband, but prepare for disappointment. The BT Broadband checker may have been optimistic: when the BT engineers test your line as part of the connection process, they may discover your line is not capable of carrying the broadband signal. Your ISP will cancel the order, and you are left without Broadband.

Goto step 2 below.

Step 2

It's probably worth re-applying in a few weeks time: BT continually maintain and upgrade their equipment; also BT's planning rules change.

So... wait a few weeks, then goto step 1 above. While you are waiting you could write a letter to a MP or a councillor to relieve your frustration.
