ADSL Technology Questions

Some notes...

Could BT allow a line loss greater than 60dB?

This was raised in our first meeting with BT.

I've got an old ADSL router that I can configure as a "DSLAM". Can I use it over a private wire?

The Access Network Frequency Plan would not allow "Reverse ADSL" ( i.e. with the high bandwidth implemented in the customer to exchange direction). See annex D.2.2.

So you couldn't use it in a private wire shared in a BT cable.

OFTEL’s goal

From the Access Network Frequency Plan we read:

It is OFTEL’s goal to ensure the availability of broadband access to the largest proportion of the UK population as possible. Ideally this would be 100%, however as discussed ... this is unlikely to be achievable using only BT’s copper access network, instead a trade-off between the quality of the [Metallic Path Facility] and the potential penetration level is required.

Based on consultations with various technical groups OFTEL considers that a customer penetration level of 80 - 85% should be used as the design objective for [OFTEL's Spectral Management Plan].
