Great idea - please count me in!
I live in Willen Park and can confirm that I am just outside the 5.5 km
limit. I understand the measured (?) cable run from the exchange at
Bradwell Abbey to my house is 6.2 km (but can't recall now where I saw that
figure). I have also heard some rumours that the limit may be extended
soon, allegedly as a result of some new technology (presumably in the
exchanges) which copes better with signal degradation, but that is very much
rumour!
Like you, I think the ADSL situation here is a disgrace, but what do you
expect from a fat lazy corpus like BT. I occasionally do some work on some
of their sites, and am always amazed at their comfort levels, even after all
the job shedding they have done in the recent past.
I wish you luck with this project, but am not holding my breath! I wonder
what beers they offer in the Swan these days - haven't been there for years,
but think I should check it out soon.
All the best

| We just moved back here from Canada (Calgary) where high
speed broadband (1Mbps) was the norm and it cost £20 per month as part of
our cable TV package.
We never turned of our PC and it was always connected to the internet.
What this meant was the children emailed the friends pictures all the time,
we used to listen to Radio 2 and other stations live and because it was
always on we used it to check movie theatre times, menu's for restaurants,
and a million other things.
Most American children's TV programs usually have a web site that my two
kids would log onto straight after the show so the internet has become a
natural extension of TV for them.
So here we are in Milton Keynes, the city of the future with miles of
worthless fibre optic cabling under our feet. We are using AOL because it is
one of the few ISP's that do not cut you off after two hours. Our phone line
is always tied up with the internet. You can forget about downloads more
that 5Mb and you can imagine what is must be like when one of our Canadian
friends sends an email with photo's attached..............
I shouldn't be surprised really as it is typical of Britain to be lagging
behind and lobby groups having to be formed. I have looked into Home highway
and satellite but they don't make too much sense.
I'll be pleased to support your lobby group.

God! Please, please, please give us broadband BT.
I have moved from London and set up my business here. I rely a HUGE amount
on the internet for my work. I film all our events and have multiple image
down/up loads.
It's a nightmare and completely unrealistic for a new city to be stuck in
the dark ages.
Regards
Abby, Willen Park |
