Dear Sir/Madam

Wireless Broadband Pilot

Thank you for registering an interest in becoming a Wireless Broadband Pilot Customer. I am pleased to inform you that work is now well underway in installing the network equipment required to support the pilot. We plan to start connecting our first pilot Customers in September/October and expect the pilot to run for a minimum of four months.

Selection of pilot Customers will be based on achieving a varied mix of premise types and geographic coverage within range of the base station location. We will be offering the following services free of charge to all pilot Customers for the duration of the trial*.

  • Broadband Internet Access (minimum offering of 150K)

  • 55 Mb of free web-space

  • 15 email accounts

  • Access to Newsgroups

To be able to use the Broadband service your computer will need to meet these minimum requirements:

PC User

Operating System - Windows 98, 2000 Professional Edition, ME, XP Home
Edition, XP Professional
Processor Speed - Pentium 166MHz (or equivalent)
Memory (RAM) - 64MB
Hard Drive Space - 60MB

PC Hardware - CD-ROM Drive, Sound & Graphics Card, USB port (recommended) - if not present Network Interface Card (Ethernet Card)

MAC User

Operating System OS 8.6 - OSX
Processor Speed - PowerPC
Memory (RAM) - 32MB
Hard Drive Space - 40MB
PC Hardware - CD-ROM Drive, Sound & Graphics Card, 10/100 Base Ethernet
Socket (RJ-45 Connector)

We expect to make our selection of pilot Customers in early September and will be contacting you in due course. We will also aim to provide a further project progress update, probably via email, following that selection.

Attached with this letter is a note describing various planning considerations. We anticipate that everyone within the trial will be able to comply with these requirements and will not require planning authorisation. At this stage, you are only asked to follow the guidance on the note and advise us (email to angela.may@milton-keynes.gov.uk) of any immediately apparent problems you may be aware of.

I would once again like to thank you for your interest.

Kind regards

DO I NEED PLANNING PERMISSION?

To connect to the Broadband network, an antenna will need to be installed on your property. In most cases, you will not require planning permission for this. However, some installations may require planning permission. The following information is designed to help you decide whether you need to contact the Council Planning Department.

Houses (not flats or maisonettes): If your house is not a Listed Building or within a Conservation Area you will not require planning permission if the Broadband Network antenna would be located on the house, below the highest part of the roof, and providing that the antenna would not project more than 0.3m from the wall or roof slope on which it is located. This is also providing that there is no more than one other antenna (such as a satellite dish) already on the property.

Flats and Maisonettes: If your house is not a Listed Building or within a Conservation Area you will not require planning permission if the Broadband Network antenna would be located on the property, below the highest part of the roof, and providing that the antenna would not project more than 0.3m from the wall or roof slope on which it is located. This is also providing that there is no more than one other antenna (including satellite dishes) already on the block of flats/maisonettes.

Non residential buildings below 15m tall: If the building is not a Listed Building or within a Conservation Area you will not require planning permission if the Broadband Network antenna would be located on the building, below the highest part of the building and projecting no more than 0.3m from the building. This is also providing that there is no more than one other antenna (including satellite dishes) already on the building.

Non residential building over 15m tall: If the building is not a Listed Building or within a Conservation Area you will not require planning permission if the Broadband Network antenna would not project more than 0.3m from any part of the building. This is providing that there are no more than two other antennae (including satellite dishes) already on the building.

If you do not meet the above criteria or you are unsure about whether planning permission is required, the following contacts at Milton Keynes Council’s Development Control Department will be pleased to advise you further.

Zen

I rang Jessica at Zen today. She reported that the Broadband checker said 'No' for my TPON line. She phoned BT Wholesale who in turn suggested that Zen resubmit my Broadband application.

I should know within the next couple of days.

My Inbox

Hiya

Got a letter today from the council about the wireless broadband pilot. Two Mile Ash is within the 5km radius of the NTL Tower at Linford Wood.

I am seriously counting on this as its my ONLY way of getting broadband.

Will let you know if anything else happens...

James, Two Mile Ash

Hi

I can now tell you that freedom2surf came through for me.

My activation date was today and ....here I am, on broadband.

Tony, Springfield

I have just read the minutes from your meeting with BT.

I live in Lilleshall Avenue (west end) and was advised that (probably due to line length from Bradwell Abbey) I was not able to receive this service.

Are you aware of any positive action due to take place?

Dean, Monkston

[I know that your telephone will be on TPON (Fibre optic). BT do not provide ADSL on TPON. BT have nearly completed running in copper cable. The western half of Monkston should be have ADSL available soon.]

I received a letter from the council about the wireless broadband pilot.

This system is suitable of low latency application such as gaming, I have several friends that used to be with the TELE2 wireless ISP, only problem is watching throughout dropping in fog, heavy rain and in the summer when the branches of tree grows - all contribute to a potential Loss Of Signal!!!

Pete, Crownhill

Hi,

I thought everyone on TPON was getting transferred over to copper. Or have I missed something?

When is Mr Small having the "update" meeting? I thought it was supposed to be August.

Danny, Monkston

[August is steadily running out of days. I hope Mr Small realises this.]

Has everyone who registered for the Wireless Broadband Pilot got a letter?

Jamie, Monkston

[No. If it makes you feel better, I have been similarly spurned by our council.
You can always email Mr Jewell or phone him on 01908 254141.]

Hi All

If anyone is still interested in the BT Extended Reach Trial it might not be too late to get on it. I received this email from Zen Internet yesterday:

Subject: Extended Reach Trial Update - Order Now

Simon,

Thank you for pre-registering for the Extended Reach ADSL trial.

If you wish to complete your application for the trial, please click on the link below and place an order. You must submit your order by Monday 18th August to qualify for participation in the trial. Orders will be submitted on a strictly first come, first served basis.

Please note that this Extended Reach trial is not open to customers converting from ISDN2, or BT Highway.

http://www.zenadsl.com/ExtendedReach/RegConfirm.asp?i=311&r=3355

(Zen Partners should place their customers' order(s) through the Zen Partner programme as usual)

The order tracker will show the order as failed. Do not worry about this as it all part of the process to confirm that your line returns a red result. We will then send these orders to BT on 19th August.

Best Regards,
Zen Internet Sales Team

Good luck if you go for it!

Simon Hill, Monkston

My line passed Demons initial checks on Wednesday. The order went into a delayed status.

I now have a date of 5th September.

Geraint, Monkston

Hi All,

I have not been a member of this group very long and I have been reading the mails regarding this trial with interest, I live on Heelands and I am unable to get broadband because I have a "dirty" line (according to BT).

Does it mean that if the trials are successful everyone who wants it can have it in MK, is it free or is it very expensive, do we need to buy equipment?

Bryan, Heelands

[These good questions should be directed to Mr Jewell. Phone him on 01908 254141. I will ask, any reply will be posted here.]

I received a letter from the council about the wireless broadband pilot.

It said they will start trials in September/October so it may be some time before it is launched and we all have access.

Does anyone know if its one or two way satellite? it doesn't say.

Ian, Great Holm

[Colin replies:

The Wireless trail is based on a 10GHz wireless link from your house to the NTL Tower at Great Linford. It will not be a satellite system thus no significant latency.

Follow this link http://www.ogierelectronics.com/broad-3.htm. This is the hardware that they plan to use.]

So to the uneducated does that mean that you don't get the same delays as with satellite systems and it's not one of these systems where you still require a dial up connection ?

Is it suitable for online gaming?

[Gaming will be fine. No Delay, No dial up, and always on!

The reason there is a time delay with satellites is because they are 22,223 miles away. Linford wood is only 5 miles, so we should be OK.]
